He admitted cocaine use starting at 17 “to feel different,” plus cannabis and magic mushrooms that produced hallucinations (including a talking toilet). Party-era stories of drugs circulating among young women around him have circulated for years; the book itself confirms a pattern of heavy use rather than any single documented incident of slipping substances into mouths.
Harry’s grief over Princess Diana dominates the book. He consulted a woman who claimed psychic powers, wrote of using his mother’s lip balm on himself because the scent transported him, and described years of magical thinking that she was not really dead. Detractors have called the intensity Oedipal. The text itself is a portrait of unresolved trauma, not a confession of lust.
Taken together, Spare painted Harry as a man who publicized family humiliations, military exploits treated as punchlines, sexual anecdotes, and drug use while demanding privacy and security from the institution he attacked.
