Queen Elizabeth II reportedly complained that Meghan Markle was spending too much money on clothes. A furious late Queen is said to have received a call from her grandson, Prince Harry, which reportedly left her “rolling her eyes”.
Discussing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, royal journalist Robert Jobson revealed how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had “spent a lot of money” as working royals. Mr Jobson revealed how King Charles told Prince Harry, “I’m not a bank anymore”.
Speaking on the Telegraph podcast, ‘The Daily T’ associate editor, Camilla Tominey, revealed details of a phone call between the late Queen and Harry.
She said: “She also took a call from Harry and then reportedly remarked: ‘more money’ rolling her eyes.
To which Mr Jobson replied: “Yeh I think the point was they had spent a lot of money, they had supported Harry.. he was then saying later ‘I never got any’. He did, he got many many many thousands of pounds. More than we can probably know to the point the King said, ‘I’m not a bank anymore’.. so that’s quite telling.
Camilla also discussed how “The Queen thought Meghan was spending too much on clothes”, to which Mr Jobson said: “She did. But some people might criticise that as in the 1940s and 1950s when she was being dressed for these tours there was a lot of money being spent on royal tours.”
Ms Tominey then speculated: “But maybe not £60,000 on one Dior gown she wore during the 2019 Morocco tour?”

Mr Jobson replied: “That was seen as over the top.. not sending the right message. The Queen, at the end, was always about the right message. Throughout her life she got it exactly right.”
In 2019, The Daily Mail reported Meghan Markle wore clothing totalling more than £110,000 during her Morocco tour. Meghan, who spent three days in the North African country, hit the eye-watering figure thanks to a mixture of high street, designer and haute couture pieces, including a custom-made Dior gown.
The kaftan-style Dior gown was believed to be worth as much as £90,000, as reported by the outlet.
Meghan also showcased pieces from designers including Stuart Weitzman, Gianvito Rossi. The clothing on the tour cost almost as much as the cost of her entire Pacific tour wardrobe, which saw her wear pieces totalling £118,000 over the course of 16 days as she visited Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga in October 2018.
But despite the tensions, Prince Harry and Meghan have consistently spoken warmly of the Queen.
During their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan said: “I’ve loved being in her company. She’s always been warm, welcoming, and inviting.”
In January 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stated they would step back from being senior royals to become “financially independent” by balancing their time between the UK and North America.
They explained their new structure would allow them to continue their royal duties while also earning a professional income to support their family.
