A striking photograph of Prince William casting a clear, skeptical glance toward Meghan Markle at a formal royal event has resurfaced and gone viral, perfectly capturing what royal insiders have long claimed: the future king saw through her from the very beginning.

While Harry was swept up in a whirlwind romance, William reportedly recognized the American actress’s ambitions for what many now call them – a calculated bid for fame, fortune, and status rather than genuine commitment to royal duty.
Royal biographer and commentator Phil Dampier has been blunt about it. Referencing comments from the late Queen Elizabeth II’s cousin and close confidante Lady Elizabeth Anson, Dampier stated that William believed Meghan viewed marriage to Harry as a “stepping stone” to new fame and fortune, with no real intention of remaining a working royal long-term. “That’s why they fell out. And now we are where we are,” Dampier said. “But to have this confirmed by somebody so close to the Queen is really dynamite.”
William’s early warnings were well-documented. In Finding Freedom and later accounts, he privately urged Harry to slow down, telling him not to rush and to take time to truly get to know “this girl.” Harry, lovestruck and defensive, dismissed the advice as snobbery. In Spare, Harry himself recounted William’s discouragement about dating an “American actress” and the physical confrontation that followed arguments over Meghan’s difficult, rude, and abrasive behavior.
Those early instincts have aged remarkably well. After the couple’s 2018 wedding, tensions escalated rapidly. Allegations of Meghan bullying staff, the dramatic 2020 “Megxit” departure, the Oprah interview full of unproven claims, the Netflix series, and Harry’s memoir Spare – which attacked his own family while living off royal titles and connections – left a trail of damage. William has remained largely silent in public but has made his position clear by refusing any meaningful reconciliation. Sources close to the Wales household describe the door as “bolted shut.”
The pattern of self-serving behavior continues into 2026. During Prince Harry’s troubled UK visit in July, security requests were denied, accommodation arrangements collapsed in public acrimony, and Meghan ultimately stayed away after what sources called “one insult too many.” She later posted vacation photos widely interpreted as being taken near Princess Diana’s resting place at Althorp, drawing accusations of hypocrisy from royal commentators who noted the couple’s long complaints about privacy and exploitation of Diana’s memory.
Royal experts have grown increasingly scathing. Meghan has been labeled toxic by some for isolating Harry further from his family. The couple’s half-in, half-out approach – leveraging titles for quasi-royal tours and commercial ventures while attacking the institution that gave them global relevance – is repeatedly called out as hypocritical and damaging.
Prince William’s side-eye in that photograph was never just a fleeting expression. It was recognition of a grifter’s playbook that Harry refused to see. While William focused on duty, family stability, and the long-term health of the monarchy, Harry chose loyalty to a woman whose actions have repeatedly prioritized personal branding and grievance over loyalty, discretion, or the family that raised him. The result has been a fractured royal family, public exhaustion with the endless drama, and a brother who knew the truth years before the rest of the world caught up.
He knew then. He knows now. And the evidence continues to pile up that Harry still doesn’t – or won’t – accept it.
